Lugano is situated in Ticino, the italian-speaking part of Switzerland, close to the Italian border.
The city is well connected, both with regards to motorway as well as railway networks, and it has several airports in the surroundings.
Lugano-Agno (LUG) airport is served by domestic flights departing from Geneva (GVA) and Zurich (ZRH), the major Swiss international airport.
The train connection from Zurich airport (about 220 km from Lugano) is an efficient and pleasant option: with the New Rail Link through the Alps, opened in December 2016, the journey - through some of Switzerland’s most beautiful landscapes and views – takes about 2 and half hours.

From June 2018 Lugano is also connected by train to Milan-Malpensa (MXP), the closest international airport (about 60 km from Lugano, in Italy). The train trip takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Different bus connections (Giosy Tours-Malpensa-express, Jetbus, Lugano Services) are also available and the shuttle trip takes about 1 hour.
Other options are Milan-Linate (LIN) and Bergamo-Orio al Serio (BGY) airports, both in Italy, connected to Milan by bus and then to Lugano by train.
